  • Troubleshoot server issues.

Target Student:

This course is designed for IT professionals such as PC, desktop, and help desk technicians who have experience supporting PC hardware who wish to make the transition to become server hardware and support specialists. This course is also designed for existing server managers who are preparing to take the CompTIA Server+ Exam SK0-004.

Prerequisites:

To ensure your success in your course you should have 18 to 24 months of hands-on experience with installation, configuration, diagnosis, and troubleshooting of PC hardware and network operating system issues. It is also recommended that you have the CompTIA A+ certification or the equivalent training and experience. You can obtain this level of skills and knowledge by taking the following Logical Operations courses:

  • CompTIA® A+ Certification: A Comprehensive Approach
  • CompTIA® Network+®

Course-specific Technical Requirements

Hardware

For this course, you will need at least one computer for each student and one for the instructor. Each computer will need the following minimum hardware configurations:

  • 1.4 GHz or faster 64-bit (x64) processor (processors with Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) or AMD Virtualization (AMD-V) technology)
  • BIOS/UEFI capable of hardware virtualization
  • 8 GB RAM minimum; more memory is recommended
  • 500 GB available hard disk space
  • DVD drive
  • Keyboard and mouse (or other pointing device)
  • 1024 x 768 resolution monitor recommended
  • Network cards and cabling for local network access
  • Internet access (contact your local network administrator)
  • Projection system to display the instructor's computer screen
  • Label maker with Labeling Tape or labels and marker pens

If you prefer, you can provide two computers per student. This will enable them to access a server and a client. One computer per student will work as well, but for some activities students will need a partner.

Optional hardware and supplies that you might need for performing some activities include:

  • Hardware toolkit including:
    • Flash light
    • Compressed air canister
    • Cable tester
    • ESD protection
  • KVM switch and cables
  • Network switch and Ethernet cables
  • Additional hardware to install such as:
    • Power supply
    • Network cards
    • SAS or SATA hard drives
    • Remote management interface
    • RAID controller
    • Rack enclosure
    • Ethernet cables—with and without connectors installed, Cat5, Cat6, and other twisted pair cables for comparison
    • Fiber cables
    • Smart UPS

Devices with LCD screens

    • Serial cables
    • Cooling devices
    • Power cords
    • Cable ties or zip wraps
  • If you plan on introducing problems on the servers in the Troubleshooting lesson, consider having failed components that you can swap into the system for students to troubleshoot.

Software

For this course, you will need the following software:

  • ISO or bootable DVD for 64-bit Evaluation copy of Windows Server® 2012 R2 (latest release)
  • ISO or bootable DVD for 64-bit Evaluation copy of Windows® 8.1 with Update 1 (latest release)
  • VHD for 64-bit CentOS 7 Linux Server (latest release)
  • ISO or bootable DVD for 64-bit Kali Linux (latest release)
  • Host-based security suite
  • If necessary, software for viewing the course slides. (Instructor machine only.)

By using the latest releases of each operating system, you will not need as long during class when doing activities in which updates are applied to the operating systems. If you are not using an evaluation copy of the Windows operating systems, be sure that the appropriate Product Keys are available for the operating systems.
